“anniversaries” – when you’re not married – can be tricky. you want to celebrate but it’s not something to go over-the-top for. i’m normally a culprit of over-celebrating any and every milestone. this year i tried to be more sentimental and stay away from the “grand gesture” present. truly, the grand gesture is loving each other every day. after all, we live together and against all odds, russ still doesn’t want to kill me.

AK sent this article to me today about why our generation isn’t getting married. While this threw me off at first (because I feel like everyone I’ve ever known is getting married or engaged), it is true that the marrying age is at its all-time high. And I’ve read articles about the dangers of cohabitation (a trend of which I am currently participating) and agreed with 90% of it. There was one point in this article; however, that really drove it home for me: fear of divorce. We don’t want to make the mistakes our parents did. We’re afraid of putting our kids through it. It really got me thinking– what are our kids going to do to avoid making the same mistakes as us?

i haven’t seen or thought about this blog in awhile, seeing as how my new job entails a lot of blogging (ie: 99% of it). things are going crazy well lately for me. i haven’t much to complain about. i have been jumping head first into the new job and getting very excited about all the directions its taking me. for instance, i renovated my laundry room this weekend (see before and afters here). that’s something i wasn’t sure i could do. it’s nothing totally insane, but it’s just nice to have good ideas filtering through my creative mind again. lots of other design blogs serve as inspiration. here are some of my faves:

solve the problem of sleeping.

we sleep 1/3 of our lives. thats 4 months a year. thats 4 months we could be devoting to curing puzzling diseases and viruses. i mean, if i wasn’t sleeping for 28 years, i could probably do something pretty amazing.

but the other issue is that i must be taking up a lot of brain space with needless information. for instance, “bootylicious” just came on my pandora. that song is from 2001 and i still know every single word. think of everything i could accomplish if i wasn’t taking up working memory with lyrics for r kelly’s “slow wind” or B-52s “roam.”

the thing about this article is that it’s truly not funny. it’s kind of.. mortifying. kids are so envious of these stars, many of whom have absolutely no talent besides being wealthy. paris hilton’s foray into acting? laughable. audrina patridge is famous for starting all sentences with “um,” “uh,” or “like” on the hills. megan fox? puh-lease. my boyfriend and i refer to her as “sex on a stick.”

It meant that everybody has problems

with little materials and even less time

to fix the things they wish they’d change

i, like a lot of people, have become a fan of the snooze button. i used to hear the alarm in the infintesimal seconds before it started beeping and turn it off, get up, start the shower and think “let’s do this.” lately, though, i have been hitting that button 2 or 3 times. i wake up, wash my face, straighten the bed head and im out the door.

i hadn’t realized how unhealthy this was until this morning. i hit snooze and suddenly, i heard my dog making noises i now associate with puking. you always have about 15 seconds to get to her while it’s welling in her throat. i jumped up, placed her on the floor and let her do her business. you might be thinking, why is her dog puking? but you should be thinking, what in the hell does this have to do with waking up?

well, i was forced to jump into action not-so-bright (it’s still dark now when i wake up) and early this morning. had to turn on the light, clean up some morning puke and brush penny’s teeth. then it hit me. i get plenty of sleep at night. there’s no reason i should have to talk myself out of bed. i need to get up excited and energized for the day. so that’s my autumn resolution (who needs new years?). i’m going to try to wake up with purpose and in a mood that will make me smile. i need to take charge! i need to act like the dog is about to puke every morning. i will be sure to chronicle how this is working out in the future. and by the way, penny just has a weak stomach.

i have a question. why are we all so nice?

let me state for the record that i have been called the opposite of nice in various forms many times. but i look over the last five years of my life with a skeptic’s eye and realize that i am just too damn nice. i let two relationships go on WAY longer than they should have, kept various friends who treated me badly & kept friends i knew i couldn’t trust. i have since taken action to try and repair lost friendships that were once good and disban friendships that were never good.

i see really great people who stay friends with people just because they have to see them all of the time or they’re stuck in some sort of guilt-lock with them. as i said, i’ve been guilty of this too. now i am in a new place and don’t have to rely so heavily on friendships, it is easier to cut out people who just aren’t good to me. and i know circumstances for everyone are different. it just got me thinking – why can’t we simply tell these people that they cause far more trouble than it’s worth to be friends with them? some are downright abusive. why can’t we just say “get lost”?

i have a theory. part of it is the guilt thing – our mommies and daddies brought us up to be nice ladies and gentlemen. but my other theory has to do with sitcoms like friends. here are people who are so different that it’s silly. and they blow up at each other, yell, hit or ignore each other for days (over the span of several episodes! gasp). but then, in the end, they talk about it and make up. we think this is how life is.

now normally i’m an optimist. but let me tell you something. not everyone is mature. yourself included. they might not want to talk through your problems. and even if they do, there’s a good chance they didn’t tell you what they actually felt. they’re still holding a grudge. and what about all the things you said in your fight? those don’t evaporate like the morning mist. those live in the hearts and minds of people for a lot longer than you think. so in short, it’s not really normal to make up with someone like this.

i’m disgressing.

my point is, we all have enough stress in our daily lives. that means that severing a relationship that has gone sour and doesn’t give you positivity might be the best idea. trust me, i’m an aries. we do NOTHING but hold on.
